Do you have any information about the M&StL in Minneapolis, Minnesota? If you have any photos or other information relating to Minneapolis,
Minnesota please contribute to this page. From the M&StL Yahoo List post #643 8/19/2002: Q: How far did the m&stl passenger trains go into the twin cities area? Did they go as far as Minneapolis? What depots did they use, Milwaukee Road, Great Northern? Did they have connections with other lines in the cities area? I would like to know? Gerald Kramer A: At least in the Doodlebug era and ending with the cessation of passenger service the M&STL used the GN depot and the road's name was up on the big billboard in neon along with the NP, CB&Q, and CGW among others. The M&STL passengers could make connections on the other roads, but I don't know how the ticket purchases were made for the other roads other than directly from them. I believe CNW and Omaha used the GN depot also. The MILW depot hosted the RI nd Soo Line. It was only about 4 or 5 blocks from the GN to the MILW depot. Louis Claeson
Q: Did M&StL trains originate and terminate at St. Paul Union Depot? If so, what trackage did they use to get there? The GN/NP/CB&Q route? A: Thank you for jarring my memory by mentioning the joint NP/M&StL timetable!! I have one dated Nov. 30, 1930. It shows M&StL trains 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, 15 and 16 operating over the Second Subdivision (Joint Terminal) trackage. The M&StL trains were daily except for 1, 2, 13 and 14, which were Monday through Saturday. The M&StL connection to the Joint Terminal line began at M&StL Connection, listed in the timetable as being at First Street North in Minneapolis. In the 12.3 miles between the M&StL connection and
St. Paul, lines crossed or passed (west to east), included: the Average speed for the M&StL trains, as listed by the timetable, were 24.6 or 29.5 mph. M&StL freights 92, 95, 97 and 98 used Joint Terminal trackage between (west to east) M&StL connection and Seventh Street. Keith Pritchard
The Milwaukee Station has been renovated and is now part of a complex of 4 hotels and has an ice skating rink in the train shed.
