Notice the streetcar turnaround track in the foreground just to the right
of the freight door.
In the late 50's the yard limits for MC were 51/2 miles apart. Deckers was in the northern portion, the track grade sloped down to Deckers for the north then started back uphill to the south in a stair step fashion. 11/2 miles south of Deckers was the Middle Yard, it sloped downhill at the north end. It was not uncommon for cars to get away, roll north pass Decker and eventually come to rest beside the Plant. One night Job 3 was coming back from the cement plants, in the glow of a street light they caught a glimpse of a car coming at them. They slammed on the brakes and jumped. When the car hit the engine the fronts of both lifted off the rails and came back down with a huge crash. After the crash the only sound was the tinkle of falling glass. Every piece of glass in the ALCO was broken! Clark Propst
