"They can't fire me or the crew any more so I can tell you this story.
Rody Walker was a section foremen. (You Could not find a better person) His son, who still lives in Fort Dodge, Iowa, can back this up. Ed Peterson was the Engineer (One more of those people that are one-in-a-million). He was Walkers brother-in-law.
I was the conductor and was riding on head end. We came around the curve into Badger and the section gas car was on the track . We hit it and knocked it down the track. It totaled it out. They Generally put those gas cars and dummy cars off on the side of the track. (hand cars they call them) They changed our orders so we were running ahead of the time on time table.
Walker and crew were up eating at the local restaurant. I walked up to the restaurant and told Walker "We have a little trouble." He said "What's that?" I told him finish your meal come see. Walker must have not checked train orders to see we were running head of time. I can still see Walker's face and his crew. He said "Boy I am in trouble now." Because that hand car should have not been on the track.
Like I told you before M&STL had 90% good people. I told Walker you are not in trouble, but those kids we saw push that hand car on the track while you were eating are if they ever catch them.
Engineer, Fireman and two Brakeman all went along with what I wrote in my report. . Who knows M.J.R. could have been Chief Dispatcher when I had the agent get on key and send in details of what took place. A little white lie never hurt anything. Agent never saw what happened. Walker and crew were same ones who fixed switches when Gamper used the snow plow for place to set brakes. Ha. What a nice world this would be if people still worked to gather like that . Many funny things took place while I worked on the M&STL. It was nice to work with people who cared about each other.
