In about 1886 Roger Kiley was killed aboard a train. He was a RR fireman living with his parents on the north edge of Ackley in Franklin County. He was 20 years old. He is buried with his parents, Patrick and Catherine Kiley, at St. Mary's in Ackley. I do not know f he worked for the Illinois Central (Sioux City/Dubuque) or the M &St.L. Do you know of a major RR tragedies around 1886?

If you are from the Ackley area and have time to check the old newspapers for information about this accident please send information to mstl@eldora.net I'll add your research to this page. Cash

Ackley canning factory - The past issue of the Ackley World Journal reports that Chiquita Foods who now operates the former Marshall Pack canning factory is closing the plant in favor of a like facility at Owatonna, MN. This factory has been an important shipper on the M&StL main for many, many years and shows up on the M&StL video and a number of slides of the StL main. Too bad as it hurts the local economy a great deal. It's called progress!!!!

Accident Report Oskaloosa 6-18-24 EEN RGK

No 96 eng 629 condr Anderson engr Benson while in on passing track at Ackley at 1020pm making a drop of a car of stoves from Passing track to 10 transfer eng 622 Jumped track at transfer frog and ran on ground to west end of passing track Eng and tank entirely derailed and eng leaning badly and in danger of turning over. Main line is fouled.....The car being dropped went to Tfr OK and did not derail....

Cause of derailment under investigation but condr advises transfer frog badly worn and spring did not close...Damage to track three rails turned over and a few ties broken. No apparent damage to eng except that pilot is broken off. No personal injuries.

No 94 being delayed at Hampton and No 95 at Ackley. An Extra West will set train out at Abbott and return to M'town. No 5 and 6 detouring via IC between Ackley and Iowa Falls and via CRIP between Iowa Falls and Hampton.

Wrecking outfit left M'town at 1230am should reach Ackley about 245am and expect to have main line clear by 6am so trains can get by.......Do not think be necessary to detour No 10. FOC 528am,,,,18th

Other correspondence in AFE 24-R-445 indicates wreck outfit reached site at 3 am. No. 10 did detour from Hampton to Abbott Crossing via CRIP. By 10 am on 18th FOC was blaming "excess speed" and the aforementioned frog. Engine 622 rerailed at 1005 am and track OK at 11 am.

In the course of repairing track rail and switch including frog were upgraded from 70 lb. rail to 80 lb, hence the AFE. Had the rail been replaced in kind there would not have been an AFE and we might never have know about this.
