From the M&StL Yahoo Group Fri, 6 Sep 2002 Subject: Modernized Macs, Final Appearance This will be rather lengthy so feel free to tune out. I'm trying to put together how the Macs looked in their final years, i.e. mid 1940s on. Based on the April 1944 issue of Railroad Magazine it appears all but one of the 35 Macs were rostered at that time. Only 601 is missing. As I may have noted in an earlier post 606, 611 and 619 to 634 were all equiped with trailing truck boosters and were classed as Mac1-61 (61300 lbs tractive effort). All the others were classed as Mac1-50 (49800lbs tractive effort). I've made an arbitrary list of visual features set out below followed by a list of locomotives with those features. To view this list in spreadsheet form click here. Full Boiler Jacket: 604, 606, 609, 611, 619-621, 623-628, 630-631 and 634. No Boiler Jacket:603, 612, 615, 616, 622, 629 and 632-633. High Side Tender: 603-604, 606, 609, 611-612, 615-616, 619-634. Side Mounted Air Pumps: 602-603, 605-606, 615-616, 618-619, 621, 623-628, 631-632 and 634. Pilot Mounted Air Pumps: 604, 609, 611-612, 620, 622, 629-630, and 633. Delta Trailing Truck: all the Mac1-61's Cole Trailing Truck: all the Mac1-50's High Speed Tender Trucks: ( I don't really know what the technical term is): all the Mac1-61's Ordinary Tender Trucks: all the Mac1-50's Side Skirting: No Skirts: 612, 615-616, 622, 629, 632-633. Straight Skirt:620 Bottom of Skirt Curves Down At Both Ends: 604, 606, 609, 611, 619, 621, 623-628, 631 and 634. Striping on Skirts: Stripe Sraight at Cab: 621, 623-628, 630, 631 and 634. Stripe straight at Both Ends:620. Large Sand Dome: 604, 609, 612, and all Mac1-61's That's what I've got. I don't have feedwater heater info, but I believe all Mac1-61's had them. There were different manufactuers used. Obviously there were many variations in these locomotives. What else is out there. I'm a bit weak on the Mac1-50's as I never saw any except the 615 and I don't have many photos either. How many more had large sand domes, high side tenders? What about air pump placement? Out of all the Macs 632 is probably the most distintive as it was the only Mac1-61 with side mounted pumps and no skirting or jacketing. It was kind of macho looking. |
