NOTE: I scanned a higher resolution and larger size image of each photo on this page. If you need to see more detail send an email request to mstl@eldora.net I'll reply to your email and send the larger file as an attachment. I did this to save download time because the hi-res photos are over ten times the size and therefore take ten times longer to download. Cash

S2 D741 Modelers Nightmare?
From the M&StL Yahoo Groups Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 From: Louis Claeson

How many undec S2s would you need to model the 741, including its renumbered self 102 to cover all its manifestations? Would nine surprise you? Here's how it works out.

Number 1-as delivered 741 had no stack or marker lights and had 36" wheels.

Number 2- stack and marker lights added within first year.

Number 3- auxiliary fuel tank and 40" wheels added in 1947. For years it puzzled me just what was done to make room for the tank which was placed between the rear truck and the battery box. Comparing builder photos and pictures taken in the early 1950's it appears the rear truck was moved back further under the cab. While the battery box appears to be closer to the front truck, photo cmparisons seem to indicate it is in the same position in relation to the handrail stanchions and hood louvres.

Numbers 4, 5 and 6. Sometime around 1948 there were stack changes. First the RS-1 type stack disappeared and for a short time it operated without a stack. Then for several months it had a very different type where the lower or fat part of the stack was shorter and wider as viewed from the side and the top part was taller and wider and was silver whereas the lower part was black. Finally for a few more months the top part was painted black ( no it wasn't just accumulated soot). I saw tis type stack on at least one of the RS-1s around this same time.

Number 7: D-741 becomes 102.

Number 8: In 1958 the auxiliary tank is removed; the blunt trucks are replaced with type Bs from an RS-1; and the radiator shutters are also replaced with those from an RS-1.

Number 9: Sometime in 1959 or 1960 a black box like structure was added on the engineer's side along the hood just in front of the cab along with some odd sheet metal tht never got painted until the unit was repainted in C&NW colors( I suppose you could call this number 10, but by then it's not really M&STL anymore and it's been renumbered 92). I thought it might have been a watchman's heater but I really don't know for sure. Anyway that's the saga of the 741. Anyone feel compelled to model all these variations? Anyone really care (probably a question I shouldn't ask).
