I'm looking at something ironic in the article now. D-438, Model SC, 600 HP, Winton 8-201A, 68:16 gear ratio, 206,600 ibs nominal weight, EMC, Blt ?/37, serial #637, Re#d 60, 1956 (Ex-EMC Demonstrator 60, aquired 4/38).
So the unit was renumbered it's original number!
EMC Order Number #E199
Model SC
Demonstrator Number #60
Builders Number #637
Builders Date: 2/1937
Stats as listed above...
Sold to M&StL as their Road Number #D-438 on 4/1938...
Renumbered M&StL #60 on 3/1956...
Acquired by C&NW with the M&StL and rebuilt 8/9/1963 as C&NW
Slug #BU-7...
As C&NW Slug BU-7 spent quite a bit of time at Butler, Mitchell, and the combined National Avenue yards in Milwaukee it provided me with the opportunity to study EMC Model SC cast frame construction.
As to the 1956 M&StL renumbering methodology it could be hard to tell if #D-438 was renumbered #60 by design or coincidense as the original Road Numbers on the M&StL reflected Builders or Delivery dates in most M&StL early Diesel-electric accounts.
One is also left questioning why NW-1 (Builders Number #788) was numbered M&StL #D-538 when the Builders Plate clearly states 6/14/1938 as the built date. It was renumbered #90 during the 1956 renumbering. It is my understanding that M&StL Diesel switch engines received their new 1956 Road Numbers as a reflection of One-tenth the horse power (HP). In that case #D-438 became #60. #D-838 (second 600 HP unit) became #61. #D-538 became #90. #D-738 (second 900 HP unit) became #91. But then this concept changed course as ALCO 1000 HP #D-539 became #92. Good for "head scratching" 8^) ... Cordially... John

It was reported in some quarters that D-539 became 92 because the M&STL;considered the engine to be only 900hp, that it didn't put out a full 1000hp so it was downrated.

I think Louis makes a good point as to why the ALCO HH-1000 #D-539 might have been retained in the 1956 - 90's series numbering. I have a note indicating that M&StL rated the 6-531T power plant at 900 HP. Cordially. John
