Do you have photos of M&StL Locomotives?

If you have any photos of M&StL locomotives, please contribute to this page.
You can send email to mstl@eldora.net

I will return any photos sent to me for scanning. If you have photos and a scanner you can send them as an email attachment. JPG format is best but GIF and BMP can be used if that's what you have. If you can save them in a resolution of 96 or 72 pixels per inch that will make them email MUCH faster. Photos scanned at a higher resolution can become so large that they take 15 minutes to email.

Clark Propst

Putting Clark's post into some kind of context let's look at the rostered locomotives on that day. Maybe all of you are ahead of me on this, but I'll plow forward nontheless. I'll not consider the switchers since they were scattered in a few places, some working and a few in the shop. As of the day in question there were 22 rostered RS-1s and one (208) was probably inactive as it was sold for parts in 1961. Five are listed here. The others are likely scattered about with several definitely in the Twin Cities area. That leaves 39road units, F3, F7, SD7, GP9m and GP9. All but two of the Fs are listed (400 and 406 are missing.) Of the GP9m only 601 and 608 are not listed, and of the GP9 only 711 and 712 are absent. Overall I would guess that's probably an average day and represents pretty good utilization.

From the 1942 Annual Report: Two 380 H.P. diesel switching locomotives D742 and D842 were purchased.
From Clark Propst: The 742 was asigned to Mason City right away and the 842 went to work at Ft. Dodge.

What follows are figures for the years 1947-1956 taken from the 1956 annual report:

Year Employees Car Handlings Locomotives
1947 2917 257,146 94*
1948 2866 246,509 94*
1949 2738 220,499 91*

Subject: M&StL Locomotive Rosters
From Gene Green's M&StL Yahoo! Groups Message 594 Date: Fri Dec 8, 2000

See July 1979 issue of NORTH WESTERN LINES for a roster of M&StL diesel locomotives plus plenty of good black and white photos. By the way, it was this article that motivated me to join the C&NW Historical Society. They do great work. Membership is worth the money - I heard dues went up to $24.50 per year - and the NWL magazine has M&StL material often enough.

The Summer 1990 issue of NORTH WESTERN LINES had an article with black and white photos on Baldwin steam locomotives of the Iowa Central, and a roster of just those Baldwin locomotives, as I recall.

See The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Bulletin No. 31 (April 1933) and The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society, Inc. RAILROAD HISTORY 154 (Spring 1986) for very good M&StL steam locomotive rosters. The last mentioned source also includes C&NW, Omaha and CGW steam locomotive rosters and articles as well as more and better photos than the April 1933 number.

The Spring 1984, Volume VII, Number 3 issue of Locomotive Quarterly contains a nice selection of M&StL steam photos.

RAILROAD Magazine for April 1944 also has an M&StL steam roster in conjuction with an article on the M&StL by the editor but this roster ignores the renumberings that occurred.

RAILROAD Magazine was printed on VERY POOR PAPER. My copy is barely holding together. Either of the RL&HS issues is no doubt the best source on M&StL steam locomotives. There are M&StL steam locomotive diagram books out there but I don't know how well they handle renumbering.

F units #407 & #411 at the Cedar Lake shops
I've been informed that these may be the wrong unit numbers.
Can someone help verify this?
