David Elliott collection
From what we've been told, our grandfather Harry Elliott, born in 1890, began his railroad career as an engineer with the Iowa Central Railway. He retired decades later as a freight engineer for the M&StL line. During this time, he and his wife Bertha lived and raised their family in Marshalltown, Iowa. In the attached photo of IaC Engine No. 9, Harry Elliott is believed to be the person second from the right. He passed away in 1960.

From an article in The Railroad & Locomotive Historical Society's Railroad History #154, published in the Spring of 1986: Loco #9 is the 2nd #9 owned by the Iowa Central. It is a 2-6-0, built in 1908. The 1st #9 was a 4-4-0.
No. 9 was renumbered as #397 in 1910 and became M&StL #394 in 1912 and sometime later renumbered as M&StL #64. Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) in August 1908, C/N 32944. Was retired in 12/38 and sold for scrap 7/39. This loco was one of two members of the loco class F-3 on the M&StL, the other being IaC #10, a sister engine. Cylinder size was 20x26, driver size 51", boiler pressure 157, and engine weight 144,000, and tractive effort 30,280. Originally these engines had a boiler pressure of 190 lbs and engine weight of 152000.
