It is September 24, 1988, and C&NW SD45 #948 lays down some smoke as she and the rest of the five-unit consist shove a grain train from Steamboat Rock to Eldora.

Pausing in the afternoon sun after leaving the cars train in the yard, a tired C&NW #948 sits near a crossing in Eldora waiting for the crew to resume the run back to Marshalltown. By September of 1988, the surviving SD45's have become increasingly rare on the whole system, let alone on the rails of the Marshalltown Subdivision.

Geeps 4478 and 4560 idle next to the elevator (International Feeds) at Eldora on an overcast day in May of 1988.

Their sides illuminated by the very last rays of a setting sun, northbound C&NW GP? #4540 and GP7 # 4176 pull the train uphill just north of Steamboat Rock. The gold and green wildflowers in the shadows of this August 1988 shot echo the paint scheme on the units, while the CAST containers behind the power add variety to the train.
