Did the M&StL and Rock Island share this depot? In the
Mileposts on the Prairie book it mentions
that the M&StL discontinued service to Montezuma in 1936.
Unfortunately This wonderful depot has been torn down to build a new city
hall and fire station.

7/24/2003 The 2 story building pictured was the Rock Island depot, the station agent lived up stairs as usual with R.I. RR in small towns. I can't remember what the M&StL depot looked like but it definitely was a separate building built atop a wood platform with crawl space underneath. Like the photo marked M&StL. I remember the last (freight) to leave town on the short Motezuma branch of M&StL (to Grinnell). My grandfather helped build the last lines of M&StL and my Uncle still worked for same line in Oskaloosa after W W II. Dale Gunnar Corpus Christi, Texas |
