Do you have any railroad information about Kanawha, Iowa?If you have any photos or other information relating to Kanawha,
Iowa please contribute to this page.
My father (b. 1918) grew up in Kanawha, and apparently spent much of his adolescence hanging around the depot. He recalls when service included two passenger trains a day, both with Pullman cars. The agent's name was Aey. At one time, there was a stockyard, a sugar beet dump, and a pickle factory located adjacent to the tracks near the depot. Though no longer in use and somewhat rundown, I recall them as fascinating places to play during visits to my grandparents in the late 40's and early 50's. The agent then was named Williamson. When the depot was torn down, my father obtained the Iowa Central pot bellied stove from the passenger waiting room, and moved it to our home in Bloomington, MN, where it heated his workshop behind the garage for many years. There is a scale model of the old depot in the lobby of offices of the Norway Rural Telephone Co. in Kanawha. The Farmers Elevator is now about the only RR customer left at Kanawha. Hope this is of interest. Fred Knudsen 9/24/2002 |
